A brief history of Aquaholics

Aquaholics Club Inc. is a not-for-profit association created to protect, restore and improve marine biodiversity through diving, snorkelling, citizen science, education and community participation.

​

The name Aquaholics was originally used by Aquatic Adventures as the informal identity of its social diving community. Over time, that community became increasingly involved in marine conservation, with Aquatic Adventures integrating environmental education, citizen-science activities and dive-based conservation initiatives into its operations, training and community engagement.

From 2018 to 2025, this work helped build a strong foundation for practical marine conservation across Victoria’s underwater environments. Divers and snorkellers were encouraged not only to explore local sites, but to observe, document and contribute to the protection of the marine life and habitats they encountered.

In 2025, Aquaholics evolved into a separately incorporated not-for-profit club. This change created a dedicated structure for conservation work, with its own governance, membership base and funding model. It also gave members a direct voice in shaping the projects, priorities and environmental outcomes the club pursues.

Aquaholics now operates as an independent, community-led conservation organisation while continuing to collaborate with aligned partners. Its purpose is to support practical action for marine biodiversity, including ecological monitoring, invasive species response, marine debris removal, habitat restoration support, education and volunteer development.

The separation from Aquatic Adventures allows Aquaholics to pursue its mission more democratically, transparently and sustainably, while continuing to collaborate with businesses, conservation organisations, government bodies, community groups and volunteers who share its commitment to healthier marine and coastal environments.

• 2018–2025: Conservation activities developed through Aquatic Adventures community.

• 2025: Aquaholics incorporated as a separate NFP club.

• 2026 onward: Project-based conservation, citizen science and partnerships.
